We visited Chateau Qiankun baijiu DIY center, under the guidance of a sommelier from Luzhou Laojiao. We got hands on experience like blending a cup of baijiu according to our own tastes. We also learn about the art of baijiu tasting as well. The DIY classroom was bright and spacious, decorated like a traditional Chinese styled chemistry lab. Our sommelier was an elegant classical beauty in a white cotton Chinese gown. She taught us the four important steps of “calm, observe, smell and taste” in the art of baijiu tasting. By following the steps, it felt like we had travelled back to the most prosperous era of the Chinese traditional culture.

One of the baijiu cultures displayed in the Wuliangye museum is about baijiu and martial arts. Since ancient times, poets are often associated as baijiu lovers. In fact, the warriors from ancient times were also known to love drinking because it could show their great spirit and martialism. There are also many types of martial arts derived from the drinking myths such as the drunken fists, the drunken swords and etc. These are successfully conveyed especially in the Hong Kong movies where the heroic complex of the characters has influenced the passionate younger generations.

In olden times, Wuliangye was called “Za Liang Jiu” or baijiu made of food grains and the literatis called it “Yao Zixue” . In a grand event, Mr Deng Zijun (Wuliangye successor) changed the name to “Wuliangye which means the essence of the five grains and cereals.

Outside the “ Chun Yang Dong”, we were lucky to taste the 85 ° original cellar baijiu which sells at $8888 per 500 gram. The taste of the baijiu is sweet at first and then slightly spicy when down the throat. The aroma will lingers on in the mouth for a long time making you wanting more. Here, we also get to know a saying: “ Luzhou Laojiao, China’s honour, 1573, just drink it! ”
